Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to cut and polish the painted surface of vehicle body panels. This unit involves planning and preparing for the task, identifying types of vehicle paint surfaces and finishes, cutting and polishing vehicle panels, and maintaining the work area, tools and equipment.This unit applies to those undertaking a Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) or pre-vocational qualification as preparation to entering the automotive service and repair or automotive manufacturing industry. The unit is designed for use in a highly supervised context.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to cut and polish vehicle body panel
  • 1.1 Interpret task instructions and identify body panel to be worked on
  • 1.2 Identify paint finish type and document according to workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Source and interpret manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures for cutting and polishing body panel surface
  • 1.4 Source and interpret safety and environmental requirements
  • 1.5 Identify potential hazards and risks associated with task and report to workplace supervisor
  • 1.6 Identify tools and equipment required for cutting and polishing body panel and check for serviceability
2. Cut and polish body panel
  • 2.1 Use polishing tools and equipment according to workplace procedures and safety and environmental requirements, and without causing damage to vehicle components or systems
  • 2.2 Use products according to vehicle paint finish type, workplace methods, and paint manufacturer specifications
  • 2.3 Polish exterior paint finish according to workplace and manufacturer prescribed procedures
3. Complete work processes
  • 3.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
  • 3.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
