Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform complex dance technique demonstrating range, depth, precision and artistry in traditional ballet and contemporary works at a professional level for rehearsals and productions of established or original works.The unit applies to those who are moving towards professional careers in contexts where complex dance technique and versatility are required. Dancers may be employed by professional companies where they perform advanced repertoire from traditional ballets and contemporary works as part of ensemble, duo or soloist roles. While some supervision and guidance are provided in practice sessions and rehearsals, dancers are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others during practice sessions, rehearsals and live performances.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Rehearse performances
  • 1.1 Prepare for rehearsals without supervision
  • 1.2 Contribute to the creative process of rehearsals with a high level of initiative, confidence and understanding of the historical and stylistic background to repertoire
  • 1.3 Respond promptly to direction from required personnel
  • 1.4 Show detailed interpretation of dance sequences as required by the choreographer
  • 1.5 Refine professional skills and develop performance using feedback and notes from choreographer or director
  • 1.6 Practise and rehearse sequences until performance standard is reached
  • 1.7 Perform warm-up and cool-down activities in conjunction with dance activities according to safe dance practices
2. Perform roles in professional level performances
  • 2.1 Undertake physical and mental preparations required for performance context
  • 2.2 Confirm personal presentation is appropriate for performance context
  • 2.3 Convey choreographic intent and mood of dances through artistry, rhythm and musicality
  • 2.4 Demonstrate a professional level of performance presence and partnering techniques when presenting variations and repertoire
  • 2.5 Execute complex variations and repertoire with a high level of technical precision and following safe dance practices
  • 2.6 Convey a high level of spatial awareness required for solo, group and partnering work
  • 2.7 Demonstrate strong cohesion in group and partnering work as required
3. Review and identify ways to develop professional practice
  • 3.1 Evaluate quality of performances and discuss improving individual and ensemble technique during debriefing sessions
  • 3.2 Refine professional work ethic and knowledge of dance and staging terminology
  • 3.3 Develop realistic parameters for extending scope of performance practice in consultation with teachers and mentors
  • 3.4 Identify regimes and artistic strategies for refining own performance technique
