Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to construct and dismantle fences and gates in civil construction, including constructing gates, fencing and signage and carrying out dismantling procedures and housekeeping procedures.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of tasks in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for constructing and dismantling fences and gates
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to construct and dismantle fences and gates documentation, and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Confirm and identify requirements for complying with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
- 1.6 Identify, address and report environmental issues, potential hazards and risks
- 1.7 Select plant, tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
- 1.8 Identify, confirm, and locate materials required for work application
2. Erect fences
- 2.1 Set out fence line and post positions according to job requirements
- 2.2 Erect fence posts in place and plumb to alignment according to job requirements
- 2.3 Fix fence rails and cladding or mesh to posts
- 2.4 Finish fencing to completed construction condition requirements
3. Erect gates and signage
- 3.1 Fit and secure gates according to job requirements
- 3.2 Install signage at entry gates according to job requirements
4. Dismantle gates and fencing
- 4.1 Dismantle fences and gates according to job requirements
- 4.2 Remove dismantled gates and fencing from site
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to site requirements
- 5.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, confirm suitability for use, and address and report issues as required within scope of own role
- 5.3 Manage and report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
- 5.4 Process records according to site requirements
