Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to work safely and efficiently in and around rotary wing aircraft when required to assist in setting up and in the operation of helicopter landing point, landing site and landing zone (LP/LS/LZ).It includes working safely in and around rotary wing aircraft whilst setting up LP/LS/LZ.This unit applies to persons working as Defence Aerial Delivery Specialists as part of an aerial delivery crew in and around rotary wing aircraft.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit would work under direct supervision, as part of a team, performing specific tasks in a range of contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Set up LP/LS/LZ
- 1.1 Identify site hazards around rotary wing aircraft, assess risk and implement control measures
- 1.2 Prepare and mark helicopter LP/LS/LZ for day and night operations
- 1.3 Use mandatory marshalling signals in accordance with organisational procedures
2 Work safely in and around rotary wing aircraft
- 2.1 Use suitable, visible clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- 2.2 Apply precautions when operating on or near aircraft movement areas in accordance with organisational procedures
- 2.3 Obtain clearances to approach and enter aircraft and comply with instructions and signals from aircrew
- 2.4 Identify and react to the manoeuvring patterns of aircraft
- 2.5 Maintain visual contact with the pilot, other aircrew and ground staff
3 Work effectively in and around rotary wing aircraft
- 3.1 Follow aircrew instructions during boarding and loading activities
- 3.2 Follow aircraft design features while boarding and loading
- 3.3 Identify and comply with aircraft role and capability limitations
- 3.4 Identify and comply with aircraft loading weight, balance and loading system
