Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to differentiate between the different types of tackle outfits in order to select, use and maintain the outfit that is most appropriate to the location and fish species.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Select tackle outfit
  • 1.1. Select rod suitable to the function, location, habitat and target fish species.
  • 1.2. Select reel according to the rod and style of fishing.
  • 1.3. Select line according to the rod, reel and type of fishing.
2. Balance outfit
  • 2.1. Identify the benefits of matching rod, reel and terminal tackle.
  • 2.2. Balance rod to reel and match line class to rod and reel, according to the requirements for line selection, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 2.3. Select additional equipment that may be required to complete tackle balancing and apply correct use for a specific type of outfit.
3. Apply casting techniques
  • 3.1. Apply safety procedures to ensure safety of self and others prior to casting according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 3.2. Identify spool actions for different types of reel.
  • 3.3. Determine fly casting techniques and situations where each technique is used.
  • 3.4. Apply appropriate fly casting technique according to the situation, relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 3.5. Determine the use of different parts of a reel and apply in casting.
  • 3.6. Hold rod and reel correctly and apply casting technique according to type of outfit to achieve distance, accuracy and efficiency.
4. Repair and maintain outfit
  • 4.1. Identify outfit service and maintenance requirements and demonstrate routine maintenance and service of tackle outfit according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 4.2. Clean outfits while fishing according to organisational policies and procedures.
  • 4.3. Repair rods, reels, lures and tackle in the field according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit
Evidence of the following is essential:
applies knowledge of different types of reels, rods, line and tackle to select, use and maintain fishing tackle outfits
selects matching rods, reels and lines suitable to the style of fishing and balances tackle appropriately
conducts routine repairs, maintenance and services on an outfit in the field.
Context of and specific resources for assessment
Assessment must ensure participation in multiple casting activities using fishing tackle outfits that reflect local conditions to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.
Assessment must also ensure access to:
suitable locations to select, use and maintain fishing tackle outfits
a variety of fishing tackle outfit equipment suitable for use in a particular type of recreational fishing for a specific habitat.
Method of assessment
A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:
observation of safe participation and demonstration of selecting, using and maintaining fishing tackle outfits suitable to a particular species of fish and location
observation of balancing outfits according to the rod, reel and line being used, and of safe casting techniques
oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedures, different types of tackle outfits, and factors affecting outfit selection
third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.
