Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform as a vocalist at an advanced level and demonstrate high levels of technical and expressive vocal skill.The unit applies to those who are vocalists and have a higher level of competence in areas including performance preparation and craft skills, and who seek regular professional performance opportunities. They are expected to show commitment to improving their skills and expanding their repertoire in ways that allow them to demonstrate higher levels of technical and expressive skills. They must also act on feedback from colleagues and mentors. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Refine skills using practice sessions
- 1.1 Identify strengths and weaknesses in own performance skills in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Identify goals for refining performance technique and develop a practice plan and strategies that incorporate these goals
- 1.3 Develop technical control of voice and refine individual style according to development goals
- 1.4 Experiment with repertoire and exercises to refine technical accuracy
- 1.5 Listen critically to own performance and evaluate technical strengths and weaknesses, adjusting practice regime as required
- 1.6 Confirm practice is undertaken in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles
2. Plan repertoires
- 2.1 Research new repertoire and identify pieces that advance performance scope and skills according to own development goals
- 2.2 Use opportunities to trial new work for peers or mentors, and incorporate their feedback into private practice
- 2.3 Practise pieces or works that focus on identified areas of technical development
- 2.4 Select repertoire, confirming that copyright and performing rights requirements are met, and determine order of items for performance
- 2.5 Confirm final program for performance with required personnel, and source required accessories and equipment
- 2.6 Develop rehearsal schedule for program with required personnel
3. Present professional performance programs for audiences
- 3.1 Undertake required psychological and vocal warm-up and warm-down activities
- 3.2 Use verbal and non-verbal cues to indicate start, end and changes throughout performance
- 3.3 Create a variety of musical effects using vibrato and different vocal techniques as required
- 3.4 Control intonation, rhythm, tempi, expression, phrasing and nuance to a professional performance standard in line with chosen repertoire and musical style
- 3.5 Interpret and realise emotional content of songs using vocal articulation and tone colours
- 3.6 Mitigate errors using performance recovery measures, confirming minimum disruption to performance flow and audience experience
4. Evaluate vocal techniques in performances
- 4.1 View or listen to recordings of own performance and analyse technical and expressive execution
- 4.2 Note areas for improvement, and develop strategies to improve future performances
- 4.3 Seek feedback on performance from required personnel and incorporate feedback into own strategies for future improvement
