Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret design specifications and use advanced construction techniques to perform sewing and finishing operations to complete whole garments, which may be design samples. The focus of the unit is on the skills to use multiple types of machines to produce garments which require use of advanced techniques either because of design feature details or more complex construction and assembly requirements.This unit applies to individuals working independently who are responsible for their own outcomes and who may have some responsibility for the work of others.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Establish work requirements
  • 1.1 Analyse design specifications to identify construction requirements
  • 1.2 Examine garment components for compliance with design and production specifications and make required adjustments
  • 1.3 Determine construction requirements and plan sequence of operations
  • 1.4 Prepare equipment and working area in accordance with job requirements
2. Construct and finish garment
  • 2.1 Use techniques according to requirements of pattern, component detail and design specifications
  • 2.2 Use and maximise features and capabilities of machines to achieve required outcome and quality standards
  • 2.3 Regularly check performance of machine for signs of faulty operation and make required adjustments
  • 2.4 Finish garment to required standard and inspect against design and production specifications
3. Review design and production processes
  • 3.1 Identify garment construction problems, and document feedback to designers and patternmakers
  • 3.2 Share informed ideas about garment construction with colleagues using positive and constructive communication techniques
  • 3.3 Review production processes to assess timing and task requirements and identify alternative processes to achieve more efficient or effective outcomes
