Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to compact asphalt with rollers
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply compact asphalt with rollers documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.6 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks and check for faults within scope of own role
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Prepare roller
  • 2.1 Perform start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.2 Plan water usage and replenishment according to job requirements
  • 2.3 Set tyres to required pressure according to workplace procedures
3. Compact asphalt
  • 3.1 Determine speed and rolling patterns according to job requirements
  • 3.2 Set amplitude and frequency as directed for vibratory steel wheeled rollers
  • 3.3 Avoid damage to other structures when in operation
  • 3.4 Monitor watering system and prevent pick up
  • 3.5 Maintain uniform speed and rolling pattern according to job requirements
  • 3.6 Compact joints according to job requirements and workplace procedures
  • 3.7 Compact final surface free of blemishes and rolling marks
  • 3.8 Maintain safe distance between rollers, other plant and the paving crew
4. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 4.2 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to workplace procedures
  • 4.4 Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
5. Relocate roller
  • 5.1 Prepare roller for relocation
  • 5.2 Drive roller safely on highways and construction sites
6. Clean up
  • 6.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
  • 6.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
  • 6.3 Carry out housekeeping to workplace requirements
