Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct activities essential for the functioning of a medical imaging environment, including, specialist cleaning, stock maintenance and set-up requirements.This unit applies to workers assisting a medical imaging professional in a hospital or community based setting. It does not equip a worker to perform medical imaging. All work should be performed under direction and supervision as determined by a medical imaging professional. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Contribute to set-up for medical imaging
- 1.1 Assist with examination room preparation and tidiness
- 1.2 Refill medical imaging paper printer and film printer
- 1.3 Assist with the maintenance of hard copy film processor
- 1.4 Safely transport mobile X-ray and ultrasound equipment
- 1.5 Identify and report perceived equipment issues to the appropriate person
2. Clean medical imaging equipment and environment within scope of responsibility
- 2.1 Clean medical imaging equipment using appropriate materials and according to manufacturer’s requirements according to instructions from a medical imaging professional
- 2.2 Clean examination rooms as required
- 2.3 Contribute to the maintenance of a tidy and clean medical imaging environment
- 2.4 Conduct cleaning according to infection control requirements
- 2.5 Document cleaning processes according to organisation protocols
- 2.6 Use and dispose of cleaning materials and other waste according to manufacturer and organisation guidelines
3. Maintain medical imaging stock
- 3.1 Maintain levels of disposable stock according to organisation protocols
- 3.2 Monitor medical imaging supplies and order where required
- 3.3 Maintain adequate stocks of clean linen
- 3.4 Monitor oxygen cylinders and order when required
4. Provide client support for the imaging process
- 4.1 Assist the medical imaging professional with client transfers and movement in a manner consistent with safety requirements, medical imaging requirements, relevant lifting policies and infection control requirements according to instructions from a medical imaging professional
- 4.2 Assist with client and process needs during the medical imaging process under the direction of the medical imaging professional
- 4.3 Ensure own actions do not compromise sterile field
5. Work safely in a medical radiation environment
- 5.1 Work in a manner consistent with radiation protection principles
- 5.2 Comply with organisation’s radiation management plan
- 5.3 Use required personal protective equipment and personal monitoring in the medical imaging environment
- 5.4 Comply with all safety signs in the medical imaging environment
- 5.5 Report any concerns about radiation safety according to organisation protocols
