Description
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to remove and replace the roof lifters and gas struts on a recreational vehicle. The same lifters and struts may be replaced, or the removed lifters and struts may be replaced with different lifters and struts. The work will be carried out in a recreational vehicle service and repair facility.This unit of competency covers the preparation for, removal of, replacement of, and clean-up after the removal and replacement of lifters and struts.The operator will be required to work to procedures, and follow plans/specifications, insurance requirements and customer needs. This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team/work group and working in liaison with other shift team members.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan the work
  • 1.1 Review the requirements of the work, including insurance requirements and customer needs
  • 1.2 Examine roof lifters or gas struts and determine what needs to be done and how to do it
  • 1.3 Check required tools and jigs are available at the worksite
  • 1.4 Check required materials and components are available at the worksite
  • 1.5 Identify any hazards and the related hazard controls
  • 1.6 Check that hazard controls are in place and operational
  • 1.7 Query any items that are different to usual and clarify requirements
2 Remove roof lifting equipment in accordance with devised procedures
  • 2.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • 2.2 Remove roof lifting equipment maximising the potential for reuse
  • 2.3 Segregate and handle waste in accordance with procedures
  • 2.4 Temporarily store roof lifting equipment which is to be reused
3 Remove roof gas struts in accordance with devised procedures
  • 3.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including PPE
  • 3.2 Remove roof gas struts maximising the potential for reuse
  • 3.3 Segregate and handle waste in accordance with procedures
  • 3.4 Temporarily store gas struts which are to be reused
4 Refurbish components as required
  • 4.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including PPE
  • 4.2 Examine all removed components and the adjacent parts of the caravan which have been revealed
  • 4.3 Identify any additional damage revealed and decide how it can be made good
  • 4.4 Negotiate with customer over any changes in job scope and cost
  • 4.5 Make good/replace as required
5 Replace roof lifting equipment in accordance with devised procedures
  • 5.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including PPE
  • 5.2 Replace roof lifters in accordance with the devised procedure
  • 5.3 Adjust as required
  • 5.4 Ensure roof and components are attached as required
  • 5.5 Ensure roof seals as required
6 Replace roof gas struts in accordance with devised procedures
  • 6.1 Use relevant hazard controls, including PPE
  • 6.2 Replace gas struts in accordance with the devised procedure
  • 6.3 Adjust as required
  • 6.4 Ensure roof and components are attached as required
  • 6.5 Ensure roof seals as required
7 Finish removal and replacement of roof lifters/gas struts
  • 7.1 Check roof lifters/struts have been refitted correctly and make any required adjustments
  • 7.2 Clean up recreational vehicle and make ready for hand back to customer
  • 7.3 Clean up work area, leaving it ready for the next job
  • 7.4 Segregate and handle waste in accordance with procedures
  • 7.5 Complete any required documentation/records
