Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to calculate blade lengths and to produce tooth profiles to work orders and specifications. The unit applies to individuals who profile saw blanks in a forest and forest product factory setting.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for profiling
  • 1.1 Review work order to determine job requirements and, where required, seek clarification from appropriate personnel
  • 1.2 Review workplace health and safety requirements, including the use of personal protective equipment, equipment lock-out and safe manual handling techniques
  • 1.3 Identify, assess and take actions to mitigate risks and hazards associated with profiling saw blanks
  • 1.4 Identify workplace environmental protection procedures for minimising and disposing of waste material, cleaning tools and equipment, and maximising energy efficiency
  • 1.5 Select appropriate tools and equipment, and check for operational effectiveness according to manufacturer recommendations
  • 1.6 Plan profiling process in line with work order and workplace requirements
2. Profile blanks
  • 2.1 Calculate key saw blade dimensions
  • 2.2 Obtain calculated blank length or cut from ribbon stock
  • 2.3 Set up press with punches to suit saw dimensions
  • 2.4 Punch first tooth in blank to align other teeth
  • 2.5 Punch remaining teeth to required pitch and tooth profile
  • 2.6 Assess performance of profiling equipment
  • 2.7 Dispose of irreparable saw blanks according to environmental protection practices
  • 2.8 Identify routine processing and equipment faults, and resolve or report to appropriate personnel
