Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate car carrier vehicle.It includes preparing for a trip, loading cars on to the vehicle, transporting and unloading cars from vehicle. Work must be carried out in accordance with relevant state/territory roads and traffic authority licence requirements and regulations for heavy vehicles.Work is performed with limited or minimum supervision, and with duty of care responsibility for self and others in achieving the prescribed outcomes.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for trip
  • 1.1 Job hazards are identified and required action is taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • 1.2 Inventory of equipment is completed in accordance with organisational requirements
  • 1.3 Inspection documentation for vehicles to be loaded is completed in accordance with workplace and customer requirements
  • 1.4 Delivery instructions, including verbal instructions for pick-up points and destinations, are checked to ensure they are consistent with manifest and inconsistencies are remedied in accordance with workplace requirements
  • 1.5 Suitable route is selected to ensure most efficient, safe and secure route for load
2 Load car carrier vehicle
  • 2.1 Loading is planned in accordance with delivery schedule
  • 2.2 Vehicles are parked in gear and brakes are applied and wheels are chocked, where necessary
  • 2.3 Loading is undertaken with due care to avoid damage to the vehicles being loaded and are loaded in the correct order in accordance with delivery schedule
  • 2.4 Vehicles are loaded onto car carrier vehicle in accordance with regulatory requirements, and workplace safety and workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Adjustments are made, as required, when loading non-standard vehicles
  • 2.6 Load is secured with correct tie down methods for transporting vehicles in accordance with workplace requirements
  • 2.7 Checks are made to ensure loaded car carrier complies with legal requirements for height, weight, width and axle loading
  • 2.8 Ancillary equipment attached to car carrier is operated in accordance with manufacturer operating instructions
3 Transport load
  • 3.1 Driving techniques are used, when operating car carrier, to minimise risk of damage to loaded vehicles in accordance with eco-driving considerations
  • 3.2 Load is conveyed to meet customer requirements for delivery times and road traffic laws are complied with
  • 3.3 Loaded vehicle car keys are secured in accordance with workplace requirements
4 Unload car carrier vehicle
  • 4.1 Identity of persons taking delivery of vehicles is confirmed in accordance with delivery instructions
  • 4.2 Vehicle unloading procedures are followed in accordance with workplace and customer requirements for safety, and in a manner that minimises inconvenience to other road users
  • 4.3 Unloaded vehicles are inspected and the condition is documented and accepted by the customer
  • 4.4 Variances from initial vehicle condition are documented and reported in accordance with workplace procedures and customer requirements
