This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to provide deck support for conveyor-car high wall mining operations in Coal mining.This unit it appropriate for those working in operational roles. No licensing, legislation, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for deck support operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply conveyor-car high wall mining documentation, and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements prior to proceeding
  • 1.3 Access, interpret and apply geological and survey data
  • 1.4 Identify, address and report potential hazards and risks
  • 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
  • 1.6 Select and wear personal protective equipment
2. Load and unload cars
  • 2.1 Carry out start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
  • 2.2 Coordinate activities with others prior to commencing, during and on completion of the work activity
  • 2.3 Carry out the staging and positioning of cars
  • 2.4 Carry out cable connections
3. Operate cars
  • 3.1 Remove surface dust from cars
  • 3.2 Pin and unpin cars
  • 3.3 Complete the work plan in within the operating capacities of the equipment
4. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 4.1 Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 4.2 Conduct inspections and fault finding procedures
  • 4.3 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
  • 4.4 Process written maintenance records
5. Carry out housekeeping activities
  • 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
  • 5.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
  • 5.3 Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
