Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to prevent fires during normal work activities. It includes the use of fire extinguishing equipment and methods for detecting fire risks.The unit applies to those working in a broad range of job roles across different work settings in a forestry environment: including saw mill, wood chip mill, veneer mill, board/plywood mill, timber treatment plant, forest products factory, and forest products sales and service, horticultural, domestic, local council and emergency services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for fire prevention
- 1.1 Review work order for policies and procedures for fire prevention, and check wih appropriate personnel
- 1.2 Identify and report existing and potential fire risks and hazards to appropriate personnel
- 1.3 Select appropriate fire extinguishing equipment for fire prevention
- 1.4 Follow workplace procedures, work instructions and legislation for fire prevention
- 1.5 Establish and maintain communication with others according to WHS requirements
2. Implement fire prevention activities
- 2.1 Eliminate or reduce fire risks and hazards and report in accordance with workplace procedures
- 2.2 Recognise signs of fire and raise alarm at appropriate time, according to workplace procedures
- 2.3 Select, check, use and store fire extinguishing equipment appropriately for the nature and type of fire
- 2.4 Access training and/or professional development to maintain currency of competence in assessing fires, responding to fires, and in using and/or accessing, fire extinguishing equipment
- 2.5 Notify appropriate personnel and complete incident and other required reports about the fire
- 2.6 Record and report fire prevention procedures
