Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain operational safety in a policing environment, including deploying tactical options and using police equipment.This unit applies to those working as community police officers, in metropolitan and/or remote areas.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Those undertaking this unit would demonstrate independent judgement and take responsibility in known contexts and defined parameters. They would perform routine tasks, while providing and communicating solutions to problems in a range of contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Respond to operational safety risks
- 1.1 Identify operational safety risks through continually monitoring the operational environment
- 1.2 Conduct risk assessment of identified operational safety risks to minimise harm to self, colleagues and the public
- 1.3 Develop response options to mitigate operational safety risks
- 1.4 Maintain communication with stakeholders while deploying selected response option to contribute to operational safety
2 Use tactical options
- 2.1 Identify tactical options for potential deployment in accordance with risk assessment
- 2.2 Determine the necessity of tactical options by continually assessing operational environment
- 2.3 Implement tactical options in accordance with situational factors
3 Manage and use police equipment
- 3.1 Access and store police equipment to ensure safety and security
- 3.2 Use police equipment correctly to maximise safety of self and others
- 3.3 Inspect police equipment to identify issues or faults
4 Report operational safety matters
- 4.1 Justify rationale for selected response to inform supervisor’s coordination and decision-making
- 4.2 Seek feedback from supervisor on selected response to inform own future decision making and response
- 4.3 Complete required jurisdictional documentation relating to identified operational safety risks and safety outcomes
