Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to write song lyrics for a range of styles, genres and purposes. The unit applies to those who apply their understanding of musical styles, song structures, copyright and royalties to song writing. They may work alone, or in collaboration with others, and write lyrics for music which has already been composed or which will form the basis of a music composition. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify lyric writing requirements
  • 1.1 Confirm musical style of song requiring lyrics
  • 1.2 Determine purpose of lyrics to be written in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.3 Determine suitable cultural and stylistic contexts to suit purpose of song
  • 1.4 Agree on collaborative arrangements with composers and performers as required
  • 1.5 Agree on conventions, formats and timeframe for final presentation of song lyrics in consultation with required personnel
2. Develop lyrical elements
  • 2.1 Generate and document ideas that suit purpose and musical style of song using own creativity and lyric writing resources
  • 2.2 Develop message of song using different writing techniques and rhyme patterns that convey required meaning, mood and effect
  • 2.3 Align lyrics with starting points, climaxes and cadence points of song melody
  • 2.4 Share work in progress with required personnel and use feedback to adjust work as required
3. Finalise and present lyrics
  • 3.1 Present lyrics in agreed format and within required timeframe
  • 3.2 Review process for writing lyrics and note areas for future improvement
  • 3.3 Address copyright and intellectual property requirements that apply to lyrics
