Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid in an aviation environment, in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.It includes responding to an inflight emergency, applying appropriate inflight first aid procedures, communicating incident details, and evaluating incident and own performance.This unit addresses aviation technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to safety management duties of flight and ground operations personnel, and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex aviation operational environments.Operations are conducted as part of recreational, commercial and military aviation activities across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Work is performed independently or under limited supervision as a single operator or within a team environment.Work is performed independently or under limited supervision within a single-pilot or multi-crew environment.Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this unit of competency, including requirements for refresher training, should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory work health and safety regulatory authority.Use for Defence Aviation is to be in accordance with relevant Defence Orders, Instructions, Publications and Regulations.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Respond to an inflight first aid emergency
- 1.1 Inflight first aid emergencies are recognised
- 1.2 Immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others are identified, assessed and managed
- 1.3 A systematic patient assessment allowing for quick identification of atrisk patients is completed
- 1.4 Situation is assessed and assistance is sought from other flight crew or aviation support services
2 Apply appropriate inflight first aid procedures
- 2.1 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is performed in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines
- 2.2 Inflight first aid is provided in accordance with established first aid principles
- 2.3 Respectful behaviour towards casualty is displayed
- 2.4 Consent from casualty is obtained where possible
- 2.5 Available aircraft resources and equipment are used to make casualty as comfortable as possible
- 2.6 First aid equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer instructions
- 2.7 Casualty’s condition is monitored continuously and responded to in accordance with first aid principles
3 Communicate incident details
- 3.1 Incident and patient details are accurately conveyed to emergency response services
- 3.2 Details of incident are reported to workplace supervisor as appropriate
- 3.3 Comprehensive patient records are completed and confidentiality of these records and information is maintained in accordance with statutory and/or organisational policies
4 Evaluate impact of incident on own performance
- 4.1 Possible psychological impacts on self and other responders involved in critical incidents are recognised
- 4.2 Individual needs are addressed in debriefing participation
