Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and apply custom painting techniques to a variety of vehicle body panels or substrates in order to produce custom illustrations, graphics and visual effects. It includes developing paint stencils and applying clear or tinted topcoat refinishing materials by spray gun application. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools and equipment, selecting designs and creating special painted effects using refinishing materials according to workplace or customer instructions, and completing workplace processes and documentation.The unit applies to those working in the automotive paint refinishing repair industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare to carry out custom painting on vehicle body panels
- 1.1 Determine job requirements from workplace instructions
- 1.2 Access and interpret painting information
- 1.3 Access and interpret custom design specifications
- 1.4 Identify hazards associated with the work and manage risks
- 1.5 Identify and check design stencils, painting equipment, and materials for quality and serviceability
- 1.6 Prepare work plan to identify custom painting application methods, minimise waste, and prevent damage to vehicle
2. Determine custom design
- 2.1 Select custom paint design, layout and colour according to workplace instructions, design specifications, and customer order
- 2.2 Develop and refine draft design to customer requirements
- 2.3 Confirm approved custom graphic design with customer
3. Prepare design templates and stencils
- 3.1 Prepare design stencils and templates based on design and shape specifications and check against workplace instructions
- 3.2 Apply design to stencils
- 3.3 Cut out stencils using selected tools according to workplace procedures and safety and environmental requirements
4. Mix and apply paint to create a variety of different visual effects
- 4.1 Prepare substrate for the application of custom paint finishes
- 4.2 Select colour combinations and equipment required to produce various painting effects to reproduce the custom painting design
- 4.3 Mix paint colours and apply tonal order to replicate custom design
- 4.4 Produce lines, shapes, patterns and illustrations using freehand techniques with the assistance of stencils
- 4.5 Identify required backgrounds, colour combinations, and effective colours and apply special effects to produce custom illustrations and graphics
- 4.6 Produce visual texture, and light and shade, on the given design or subject matter according to customer specifications
5. Prepare and apply clear topcoat
- 5.1 Prepare painted surface for clear topcoat finish using solvent cleaners and tack rags
- 5.2 Mix and apply refinishing clear topcoat materials without causing damage to vehicle, systems or components
6. Complete work processes
- 6.1 Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
- 6.2 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
- 6.3 Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
