Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to build a solid foundation in jazz dance technique under the supervision of experienced dancers and dance teachers.The unit applies to those who have some dance experience, gained from dance classes or community dance activities. It also applies to individuals with no prior dance training, but with an aptitude for dance and an interest in developing jazz dance technique. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop technical expertise in jazz
  • 1.1 Perform stretching exercises under guidance of supervisor
  • 1.2 Perform exercises from a variety of jazz dance techniques and styles
  • 1.3 Practise using arm lines
  • 1.4 Show control in turning balances
2. Practise isolation exercises
  • 2.1 Identify purpose and application of isolation exercises
  • 2.2 Perform isolation exercises focusing on different parts of the body according to safe dance practices
  • 2.3 Incorporate required timing and basic rhythm into exercises
3. Perform simple jazz progressions
  • 3.1 Agree on progression that includes techniques in consultation with required personnel, according to own technical ability
  • 3.2 Communicate mood and style of progression to audience
  • 3.3 Maintain required posture, alignment and control during performance according to safe dance practices
  • 3.4 End dance progression as required
4. Review performances and set goals
  • 4.1 Evaluate own performance and development of foundation jazz techniques
  • 4.2 Seek coaching from others and identify areas where own dance technique can be improved
  • 4.3 Set goals for improvement and develop a strategy to achieve them
