Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare, cut, weld, lay out and fasten vinyl (heterogeneous and homogenous) sheet flooring to large areas including complex areas (such as wet areas, stairs, stringers and steps).Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install vinyl sheet flooring
- 1.1 Interpret vinyl sheet flooring installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Gather the vinyl sheet flooring, adhesives and finishing, joining and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to use or install according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
- 1.5 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the vinyl sheet flooring, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
2. Cut, fit and fasten vinyl sheet flooring
- 2.1 Determine the set out and laying direction of the vinyl sheet according to job instructions to minimise waste and joins, consider the direction of patterns and design elements, and ensure an efficient, quality installation
- 2.2 Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
- 2.3 Cut and fasten any required pre-form fillet according to job instructions
- 2.4 Lay out the vinyl sheets and check them for size, direction of grain, and sheet and pattern match
- 2.5 Measure, mark and cut the vinyl sheets as required
- 2.6 Fold back the vinyl sheet flooring and apply adhesive to the subfloor according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
- 2.7 Position and fasten the vinyl sheet flooring into adhesive according to workplace procedures
- 2.8 Weld vinyl sheets’ seams and joins according to the manufacturer instructions
- 2.9 Finish installing the vinyl sheet flooring and install skirting, reducer and edge strips to meet quality requirements
- 2.10 Check the vinyl sheet flooring is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
- 3.4 Complete task outcome documentation
