Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse, notate and edit songs and musical pieces to the standard required by musicians and vocalists during live performances.The unit applies to those who include performers, composers, arrangers, conductors, producers, editors and publishers, who prepare and use notation for music realisation in performance.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to notate music
- 1.1 Confirm performance requirements, required timeframe and final format for notation with required personnel
- 1.2 Confirm purpose, style, structure and instrumentation of musical piece to be notated with required personnel
- 1.3 Identify musical elements, forms and structures to suit purpose of musical piece
- 1.4 Determine need for fully notated or abbreviated music conventions in consultation with required personnel
- 1.5 Investigate music technology and paper-based notation methods, and select tools for notation
- 1.6 Anticipate and prepare plan to address problems that might arise during the process of notating music
2. Notate music
- 2.1 Identify and write rhythmic, melodic and harmonic structures using aural perception skills
- 2.2 Confirm use of form and music structures is in line with music notation conventions
- 2.3 Apply dynamics and expression marks when notating music
- 2.4 Notate music within required stylistic conventions
3. Present written music for performance
- 3.1 Prepare final notation in required format for required personnel
- 3.2 Provide music for reading purposes to required personnel within required timeframe
- 3.3 Seek feedback on notation from required personnel and adjust as required
4. Review effectiveness of music notation
- 4.1 Seek feedback from required personnel on process used to notate music
- 4.2 Use feedback and own evaluation of notated music to identify areas for future improvement
