Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate and monitor ore car dumpers in coal and metalliferous mining, including carrying out rail, plant and equipment isolations and routine operational maintenance. It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of tasks in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measuresNo licensing, legislation, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for car dumper operations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply documentation required for ore car dumpers
  • 1.2 Obtain, interpret and clarify and confirm work requirements before proceeding
  • 1.3 Identify yard layout limit and locations of derailers
  • 1.4 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures according to site requirements
  • 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
  • 1.6 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.7 Identify locations of emergency stop devices
  • 1.8 Locate first aid areas
2. Conduct and monitor car dumper operations
  • 2.1 Communicate work activities with others within scope of own role
  • 2.2 Assist rail operations to position ore cars in the car dumper according to job requirements
  • 2.3 Confirm correct plant operation according to job requirements
  • 2.4 Carry out car dumper prestart checks on all levels according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 2.5 Conduct prestart checks and plant inspection and identify, rectify and report defects according to site requirements
  • 2.6 Conduct car dumper operations according to job requirements and manufacturer specifications
  • 2.7 Respond or report monitoring systems and alarms according to site requirements
  • 2.8 Monitor and confirm safe operation of ore handling system and equipment
3. Maintain car dumper equipment
  • 3.1 Carry out rail, plant and equipment isolations according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 3.2 Carry out routine operational maintenance according to site requirements
  • 3.3 Inspect and maintain the work area according to site requirements
4. Shutdown car dumper equipment
  • 4.1 Carry out car dumper shutdown procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 4.2 Isolate fixed plant and equipment according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
  • 4.3 Perform post shutdown and isolation checks according to site requirements
  • 4.4 Return dumper equipment to service according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
