This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide specialised make-up services for productions in the film, television, photographic and live entertainment industries. It involves interpreting briefs, generating design ideas and providing specialised make-up services according to production requirements.The unit applies to those who are in senior roles and who apply make-up creatively, to enhance the ability of actors to portray characters, and conduct thorough background research to ensure characters are accurately represented. They work alone or on large-scale productions where they could be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Interpret creative briefs

1.1 Analyse production documentation and determine overall production requirements and timelines
1.2 Participate in preliminary concept meetings and discuss specialised make-up requirements
1.3 Identify factors that may impact the design and application of specialised make-up, including special requirements for performers

2. Generate and assess ideas

2.1 Source reference materials and research required aspects of specialised make-up design projects
2.2 Maintain currency of reference materials and findings, and organise according to production requirements
2.3 Develop initial design concepts using research findings
2.4 Evaluate initial design concepts in consultation with required personnel according to production requirements
2.5 Discuss ideas with required personnel according to production requirements

3. Develop and document make-up designs

3.1 Reach an agreement with required personnel on interpretation of character, period and style that meets production requirements
3.2 Evaluate initial concepts and select the most appropriate applications that meet production requirements
3.3 Develop specialised make-up designs and discuss with required personnel
3.4 Incorporate feedback on designs into final versions and obtain sign-off
3.5 Prepare specialised make-up plans according to production requirements
3.6 Distribute copies of make-up plans to required personnel

4. Provide specialised make-up services

4.1 Check make-up products and equipment are available according to production requirements
4.2 Check performers are comfortable and protected from hazards during make-up sessions
4.3 Explain procedures and products to performers during make-up sessions
4.4 Take remedial action according to production requirements if there are signs of allergic reaction to products
4.5 Apply specialised make-up in a professional capacity and according to required technical ability
4.6 Make required adjustments during productions as required
4.7 Check work area is left in original or improved condition
4.8 Complete workplace documentation as required
