Description

To provide formal education and training to Engineering Associate Level in the
Electronics Industry, to allow membership of the Australian Institute of
Engineering Associates and to develop in students the ability to:

-analyse the operation of electronic equipment and electronic systems and
systematically locate faults where understanding of equipment and systems, as
an entity, is required

-design, develop and implement electronic equipment items and systems, using
established techniques

-implement and manage maintenance projects in small/medium electronic
installations

-prepare and document information relating to electronic projects and studies
of systems, and present the information in written or oral form

-evaluate the performance of electronic equipment and electronic systems, and
make recommendations to maintain/improve performance

-extend personal knowledge and competence through reading and practical
studies, and adapt to new technologies

-supervise personnel and assist in their training; apply modern management
methods and provide technical advice to personnel; develop sensitivity to
people and understanding of their behaviour

-develop an awareness of the industrial environment, its communication
processes and its responsibilities

-develop broad application of components, materials, devices and systems in
electronic engineering.

1 Students entering the Diploma who have completed a recognised
engineering or associated trade course are required to complete 30 modules.

Students entering the Diploma directly from Year 12 are required to complete 39
modules which includes 9.5 modules of trade bridging studies.

Recognition of Prior Learning principles may be applied to provide credit for
knowledge and skills already possessed (see 4.1).

2 The NMEC Trade and Engineering Technician/Associate module banks are
not listed as part of this document. Reference should be made to the current
Module Reference Manuals or the complete module descriptors for further
information.

Both student and total hours are notional and are guidelines for provider
management purposes only.

Instructors and students should be encouraged to take advantage of the
acceleration facility afforded by competency-based training.

3 The course requires the selection of 39 full modules using the
following criteria for Year 12 entry:

- Can exit with Certificate IV (Course 5408) if guidelines are adhered to

- Up to a maximum of 15.5 NMEC modules, a minimum of 9 EA or dual status
and a minimum of 9 EB modules

For trade entry or equivalent

-0 to 6 full modules from the National Metal and Engineering Curriculum (NMEC)
trade bank that are listed on this document.

- 0 to 21 full EA modules from the Engineering
Technician/Associate bank, the dual status NMEC modules from the graphics,
electrical or electronic module bank.

- A minimum of 9 full modules from the EB bank


4 Select between 0 and 39 full modules from:

- the NMEC trade bank (listed)
- the Engineering Technician/Associate bank (graphics,
electrical or electronic)

4.1 NMEC Trade Bank

A maximum of 6 full modules may be chosen from this module bank (see General

Certificate of Trade Studies course may not be selected. Refer to the current
