Description
To provide the academic knowledge required by
students to prepare them to be in command of a
vessel up to 35 metres in length operating up to 200
miles from the coast.
To prepare students for oral examination by the
appropriate State Authority for the issuing of a
Certificate of Competency as Master Class 4 or
Skipper Grade 2.

VET Info Notes
1 The following modules may be completed prior to the seagoing
industrial experience:
- Small Craft Operations
- Elements of Shipboard Safety
- Marine Radio Certification
- Introduction to Radar.
2 Candidates with 15 months industrial experience may attempt all of the
following:
- Ship Knowledge 100
- Coastal Navigation 100
- Marine Engine Driver Grade 3
but will not be eligible for the oral examination.
When 30 months of industrial experience and Nautical
Knowledge is completed the candidate will be
eligible for the oral examination for the Master
Class 5 or Skipper 3.
3 Candidates who meet the following requirements will be exempt from the
modules listed in Notes 1 and 2:
a) Possession of a Certificate of Competency as Master Class 5 or
Skipper Grade 3 plus 18 months approved industrial experience (Watchkeeping
Service)
OR
b) 36 months approved industrial experience
OR
c) Qualifications equivalent to those listed above.
4 Candidates under 3(a) with 50% approved industrial experience may
attempt the course but will have their certificate restricted by the Marine
Authority.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Industrial experience is as approved by the Department of Marine and Harbours
(WA) (DMH). Standard Western Australian Department of Training exemption
procedures will apply in recognition of prior learning
industrial experience:
- Small Craft Operations
- Elements of Shipboard Safety
- Marine Radio Certification
- Introduction to Radar.
