Description
To provide sufficient knowledge for an Engineer Watchkeeper to operate marine
electrical equipment in a safe and efficient manner and form the basis for
further study required in higher qualifications.

Range of Variables
This module is taught in a classroom and laboratory using Integrated
Theory/Practical teaching method. Equipment in the electrical laboratory will
be used in the practical elements.

Internal Assessment 100%
The assessment of this module is designed as far as possible to assess the
critical components of the module more than once in order to provide a more
valid assessment and to avoid problems caused by single failures or fluke
passes.
The assessment scheme is holistic in nature and requires assessing on the
integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this section of the
module, the learner must show evidence of achievement of the module aim. This
approach enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve
the required outcome.
The assessment will be an ongoing process with written assignments conducted
throughout the duration of the module. The final examination will be
administered at the completion of Learning Outcomes 1 to 6, and will be in two
parts. Section A will be a written assessment of two hours duration and will
deal with the written components of assessment as mentioned in the assessment
methods. Section B will be a practical assessment of three hour duration when
each learner will be assessed in the practical components of assessment as
mentioned in assessment methods.
A pass will constitute a score of 50% or more in the assignments and written
test in Section A, and correct operation of the equipment in the Practical
assessment of Section B
Assessment methods include:
- Written assignment
- Short answer and/or essay type questions
- Practical test to assess safe and correct use of multimeters
