State Implementation and Classification
Description
To provide students with the basic skills and knowledge required to maintain
and operate marine engines, machinery, and systems. The course provides the
theoretical knowledge required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority
(AMSA) for the position of Chief Marine Engineer on board vessels with a
propulsive power of 3000 KW or more, operating in Australian coastal and
international voyages.
Following sea service as required by AMSA the graduates would be employed as
senior marine engineers on board ship. They would be engaged to perform any or
all of the following tasks:

control the motivation and development of personnel
-
plan and control the maintenance of all marine propulsion, auxiliary
and mechanical services machinery

design and prepare drafts for system modifications
-
control and evaluate Occupational Health and Safety in the work
environment
-
know and use all relevant local and international environmental
regulations and instruct senior engineers, engineer watchkeepers and ratings in
their use
-
supervise senior engineers, engineer watchkeepers and integrated
ratings at sea and in port, and supervise short labour in port and dry-dock
-
communicate with marine superintendents and management personnel of
repair and supply companies
-
manage fire prevention activities
-
apply basic first aid techniques and operate life support systems
-
take charge of the operation of the survival and life saving equipment
carried on board ships
-
use theoretical knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, naval
architecture, and electrotechnology in diagnosing faults and solving problems
on board ship.
