Description
To provide the learner with the necessary off-the-job skills to be able to
operate and maintain the equipment and fittings found in the ship’s steam
systems, whilst serving at sea in the capacity of Watchkeeping Marine Engineer.
Range of Variables
This module is taught in a classroom which has access to a complete range of
modern audio visual presentation equipment. Demonstration models together with
suitably sectioned machinery components should also be available for use by
instructors to illustrate particular points.

Use of a practical demonstration laboratory area is required for a range of
practical laboratory experimentation to back up the classroom learning.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this module, the
learner must show evidence of achievement of the module aim. This approach
enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve an
holistic outcome.

The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
