To provide the learner with the analytical skills and knowledge required by a
marine engineer to skillfully maintain and operate marine diesel engines and
diesel systems to the level of Engineer Class 2.

The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this module, the
learner must show evidence of achievement of the module aim. This approach
enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve an
holistic outcome.
The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
Assessment methods include:
- Essay type questions including short answers requiring sketches
- Simulator/computer exercises
- Participation in laboratory/workshop and submission of a relevant
report.
