Description
To provide training for marine engineering watchkeeping students so that they
develop skills and acquire knowledge in applied mechanics principles.
The training will enable learners to calculate forces, pressures, stresses, and
strains in static structures and dynamic machines.
The module will satisfy the educational requirements specified in Chapter
A111/1 of the annex to the International Convention on Standards of Training,
Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (revised 1995) to the rank of
Marine Engineer Watchkeeper.

Range of Variables
This module is taught in a classroom and laboratory. Integrated
theory/practical teaching method. Equipment in the mechanical laboratory and
strength of materials laboratory will be used in the practical work.
This module will be delivered entirely in an off-the-job environment using a
combination of theoretical and practical teaching methods/strategies in class
and in the laboratories.

Evidence Guide
Internal Assessment 100%
The assessment of this module is holistic in nature and requires assessing on
the integration of skills and knowledge. To be successful in this module, the
learner must show evidence of achievement of the module aim. This approach
enables the assessment to be carried out by different means to achieve an
holistic outcome.
The assessment scheme is generally designed to ensure that critical knowledge
and skills are assessed more than once and in a variety of ways throughout the
module’s assessment events. This provides a valid assessment of the learner’s
abilities and avoids misrepresentation of failures caused by single cases of
poor performance.
Assessment methods include:
- Written short answer questions
- Calculation type questions
- Participation in laboratory work and submission of a relevant report
