This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare to undertake a first aid course. This includes basic first aid vocabulary, prior to undertaking first aid training.

The unit of competency is applied by individuals who are developing knowledge to undertake first aid training.

Become familiar with first aid

1.1 Identify examples of what first aid is
1.2 Identify how first aid training/certification is gained
1.3 Identify situations where first aid training/certification would be useful

Become familiar with first aid vocabulary

2.1 Identify words commonly used during first aid situations
2.2 Identify and name basic body parts
2.3 Practise using first aid vocabulary in simulated first aid scenarios

Seek first aid help

3.1 Identify ways in which to stay calm and keep focused in a stressful situation
3.2 Identify situations that would require first aid assistance
3.3 Call for help and respond to questions about emergency
