This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to co-ordinate the provision of play based programs for individual and groups of children.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who establish contexts that enable the development of programs for children, then implement and evaluate these programs in collaboration with children, families and other educators.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Design a structure to enable play-based learning programs
  • 1.1 Clarify and document own philosophical approach and how it will be reflected in the program
  • 1.2 Develop a process to gather data that will inform program decisions
  • 1.3 Create a flexible daily schedule to ensure a flow between play, routines and transitions
  • 1.4 Identify staffing requirements in accordance with workplace and legislative obligations
2 Gather data from all stakeholders to inform the program
  • 2.1 Consult with children about their interests, likes and dislikes
  • 2.2 Ask families about the goals and aspirations they have for their children
  • 2.3 Observe children’s play and interactions and document learnings about their development, interests and capabilities
  • 2.4 Document the analysis of the gathered data
3 Create a play based learning program for children
  • 3.1 Identify and document the intended outcomes of the program for individual and groups of children based on data analysis
  • 3.2 Select the play experiences, play spaces and resources that will be included in the program
  • 3.3 Design the layout of the physical environment including placement of materials and equipment
  • 3.4 Allocate educators to set up environments and implement the experiences for individuals and groups of children
  • 3.5 Determine how educator interactions with children will contribute to program outcomes
4 Oversee the implementation of the program
  • 4.1 Ensure materials and resources are available prior to implementation
  • 4.2 Guide other educators to ensure their interactions and implementation of experiences support the program outcomes
  • 4.3 Adapt the program in response to unexpected circumstances
  • 4.4 Collect and document observations of how individual and groups of children engage in the program
5 Evaluate the implementation and outcomes of the program to inform future planning
  • 5.1 Gather children’s perspectives about the program
  • 5.2 Seek feedback from educators and families about the program
  • 5.3 Analyse observations of children’s participation in the program
  • 5.4 Document own reflections of strengths and areas for improvement in planning and implementing the program
  • 5.5 Use feedback, analysis and own reflections to determine if program outcomes were achieved and to inform future programs
