Description
To provide knowledge and understanding of the principles of human development
from conception to death.

To provide knowledge and understanding of the social-emotional, physical and
cognitive needs and the developmental milestones characterising 0 to 5 year old
children.

To provide training in objectively observing children’s behaviour and
development.
Range of Variables
1 The intent of this module is to give an overview of human development
with an emphasis on the ages 0 to 5 years. This module is written specifically
at an introductory level and does not include theories of development. For the
study of development the focus is on the individual and their needs.

2 The module could be delivered either through an open learning mode or
in a group context. At this introductory level, it is recommended that
participants have access to facilitated group discussion as a method of
delivery.

3 This module is knowledge-based and the application of knowledge to
care giving or classroom support is not covered. A principle of delivery is
the importance and value of knowledge to caring for children.

4 The assessment methods for this module include on-the-job and off-the-job
assessment. Participants must have access to a Supervised Field Placement (SFP)
