Description
This subject aims to:
- describe the essential features of the inverted file
database management system ADABAS.
- teach the basic features of the fourth generation
application development system NATURAL.

Assessment 30%
Students must pass the written paper. Where a pass
is achieved in the written paper, the overall mark
is the sum of the two components, weighted as shown
above. Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100% weighting for
the written paper.
Written Examination 70%
Exam solutions are to be written in STRUCTURED MODE.
The examination will consist of three sections:
(1) Short-answer questions relating to:
- structure of ADABAS/NATURAL files and NATURAL system
environment
- record selection
- I/O
- conditional processing
- system functions.
(2) Produce a report based on user input
information, and gathering of data from at least two
files, with some aspects of logical coupling.
(3) Modify the contents of an existing database
file, with some emphasis on the techniques of
maintaining database accuracy and integrity.
Internal Assessment 30%
Students should be able to design, code and test
assignments/exercises on the following topics:
(1) Select data from a file, to produce a report in a specified format.
Some aspects of single- level control breaks should be included.
(2) Access from file of specified information when some attribute
information is input interactively.
(3) Produce a menu-driven program which will:
- store a new record to a file
- update an existing record. Single-valued fields only
- delete an existing record.
