Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use ethical work practices that promote children’s safety, dignity and rights.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who maintain the rights and dignity of children through their interactions, care practices and ethical management of information. They empower children to contribute to decisions that affect them and implement strategies to support children’s right to be protected from harm.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Maintain children’s dignity during interactions
  • 1.1 Respond to children in a consistent, courteous, nurturing manner
  • 1.2 Use communication strategies that are inclusive and reflect children’s cultural and family background, needs and interests
  • 1.3 Use children’s names when interacting with them
  • 1.4 Implement clear and consistent limits that reflect developmentally appropriate expectations of children
  • 1.5 Use positive guidance techniques when responding to challenging or inappropriate behaviour
2 Maintain children’s dignity during care routines
  • 2.1 Seek child’s permission prior to implementing personal care routines
  • 2.2 Explain to children what you are doing as you assist them in personal care routines
  • 2.3 Encourage children to do as much as possible for their own personal care needs according to their culture, age and stage of development
  • 2.4 Ensure children’s privacy during personal care routines
3 Consult with children about matters that affect them
  • 3.1 Plan discussions with children to gather their feedback
  • 3.2 Adjust communication to suit the age, culture and development of children
  • 3.3 Listen to and acknowledge children’s contributions
  • 3.4 Incorporate children’s opinions and perspectives in decision making
  • 3.5 Provide feedback to children to show how their views have been incorporated into the decision making process
4 Manage information ethically
  • 4.1 Inform children and families of the information required, and how it will be used, in a way that they will understand
  • 4.2 Obtain permission from the child and family before gathering, recording or sharing information and images of children in accordance with workplace procedure
  • 4.3 Record information using unbiased, non-judgemental and inclusive language
  • 4.4 Maintain confidentiality when recording and storing information in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements
  • 4.5 Use information for its intended purpose only
5 Utilise work practices designed to protect children from harm
  • 5.1 Remain in clear view of another educator when interacting with an individual child
  • 5.2 Restrict access of unknown or unauthorised people to children in accordance with workplace procedure
  • 5.3 Follow workplace procedures and legislative requirements for identifying and responding to children at risk of abuse or neglect
  • 5.4 Maintain the professional boundaries of the work role
