This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan, provide and modify daily routines and transitions that support children’s individual needs and development.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who collaborate with children, families and colleagues to develop, implement and review daily and weekly schedules that incorporate routines and transitions for children.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan routines and transitions that reflect the needs of individual and groups of children
  • 1.1 Collaborate with children and families to develop routines and transitions
  • 1.2 Reflect the needs, temperament and rituals of individual children in routines and transitions
  • 1.3 Plan flexible routines and transitions to accommodate children’s and families preferences, choices and cultural practices
  • 1.4 Identify and consider factors that may influence routines and transitions when planning
  • 1.5 Plan predictable routines and transitions to promote a sense of safety and security
  • 1.6 Allocate time to ensure routines and transitions are relaxed and unhurried, and to avoid children waiting
  • 1.7 Allocate educators to supervise, support and engage with children during routines and transitions
2 Plan routines and transitions that provide opportunities to enhance development
  • 2.1 Plan routines and transitions that support the development of self-help skills and autonomy
  • 2.2 Allocate time within routines and transitions for children to attempt and practise tasks themselves
  • 2.3 Incorporate opportunities for children to interact, share and work together during routines and transitions
  • 2.4 Plan routines and transitions that encourage children to take increasing responsibility for their own health and wellbeing
  • 2.5 Structure the physical environment so that children can easily access the resources and equipment required for routines

3 Implement routines and transitions
  • 3.1 Follow individual children’s routines and preferences within the broader routine
  • 3.2 Engage in meaningful authentic interactions with children during routines and transitions
  • 3.3 Explain the purpose of routines and transitions to children
  • 3.4 Respond positively to the different abilities and confidence of children as they participate in routines and transitions
  • 3.5 Acknowledge children’s efforts and achievement as they participate in routines and transitions
  • 3.6 Use strategies which encourage children’s cooperation in completing routines and transitions
  • 3.7 Ensure children’s privacy during their participation in routines
  • 3.8 Prepare children for transitions prior to the event
  • 3.9 Regularly record and exchange information with families regarding children’s engagement in routines
4 Review and modify routines and transitions
  • 4.1 Gather feedback from children, families and colleagues to determine the effectiveness of routines and transitions

  • 4.3 Alter routines in response to unexpected circumstances and events
