Description
To teach the elements of the C programming language.
To provide an understanding of the basic concepts
underlying the use of compiler programming
languages.
To teach aspects of the computer hardware and software architecture relevant to
program production and execution.
To teach structured programming concepts related to
structured program design and documentation.

One two-hour written paper 70%
Internal Assessment (3 items) 30%
Students must pass the written paper.
Where a pass is achieved in the written paper, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.
Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.
Written Examination (70%)
The examination will consist of six questions,
relating to the following topics:
- Bit manipulations (15%)
- Data organisation and storage classes (15%)
- Structures and unformatted I/O (15%)
- String processing (15%)
- Theory of modular programming (20%)
- Design and code a program (20%)
Internal Assessment (30%)
- Programs involving manipulation of arrays of strings,
arrays and pointers. (15%)
- Program involving the use of formatted and unformatted
files, structures, data conversions and bit manipulations. The program is to
be of sufficient complexity as to require a considerable design and
documentation effort. (15%)
