Description
To equip students to carry out "small system"
evaluation of hardware and/or software.

To familiarise students with the process of "large
system" evaluation.

To introduce students to software metrics and system
performance measurement.

Students must pass the examination paper. Where a
pass is achieved in the examination, the overall
mark is the sum of both components. Otherwise, the
overall mark is determined by 100% weighting for the
written paper.

Examination

A two hour written paper comprising seven discussion questions (worth
approximately 10% each) concerning:

- Cost Benefit Analysis
- The Selection Process
- Performance Measurement
- Benchmarking
- Network Selection
- Vendor Evaluation
- Legal & Contractual Issues

Internal Assessment

Two items consisting of:

- Short exercises relating to development of system
specifications and vendor evaluation
checklists 10%

- Major exercise involving selection of PC solution to given
specification(s), to include cost benefit

analysis, checklists, benchmarking, vendor
evaluation,
financing, maintenance contract and recommendation report to
management 20%
