To provide learners with the skills to safely use common laboratory equipment
and techniques in the biological sciences.
This module is designed at an elementary level to introduce the concepts of
biology using a practical laboratory program. The relevant concepts will be

Range of Variables
This module is delivered off-the-job.
It is intended that this module would be delivered over a semester, as an
integrated practical/theory class with the major emphasis being on the
development of practical skills and the introduction of the underlying concepts
being at an elementary level only. A student teacher ratio of no more than
10:1 is recommended for this module.

This module is designed as an introductory course for integrated theory and
practical instruction with the major emphasis being on the development of
practical skills. Laboratory assessment should be designed to reinforce the
practical skills as well as to reflect the integrated approach to theory and
practical work with close links between theoretical concepts and practical
applications.
Written assignments, observation of laboratory work, the logbook (content and
presentation) and oral questioning should be used to provide feedback to
learners and as a measure of the progress of the learning group as a whole.
Revision assignments and practical logbooks provide formative assessment and
tests should be used to provide summative assessment of the learner’s
theoretical and practical knowledge.
