To enable the learner to describe the most important physical and chemical
properties of soil.

To enable the learner to explain and demonstrate the importance of conserving
and improving soil to ensure good plant growth.

The assignments set to include work from several learning outcomes throughout
the subject area to be completed satisfactorily before the final assessment is
given.

Classroom Delivery Mode

-Assessment of practical exercises and observations recorded in a workbook
including:

- calculation of porosity
- determination of texture
- pH testing
- comparison of physical properties of different soils -
porosity, texture, structure, temperature, moisture content, organic matter,
colour

-Practical report on field soils
-Assignment on soil improvement and conservation
-Written tests with various types of short answer and multiple choice questions
and some longer questions where appropriate

Flexible Delivery Mode

Assignments including practical exercises, similar workbook type exercises,
diagrams and longer answers including a report based on:

-the collection of soil samples and observation of their properties as listed
for the classroom mode and,

-observation of soil improvement and conservation techniques particularly
related to the student's local area.
