Description
To enable students to communicate, both orally and
in writing, and to read and comprehend simple texts
in Chinese on a basic level, building upon the
skills developed in 1A.
To teach students the basic Chinese grammatical
structures necessary to perform the tasks prescribed
in this syllabus.

Internal Assessment 100%
Assessment is to be based on the listed tasks. Oral
examinations should be taped. Students must achieve
at least 50% of EACH of the three
assessment components.
40% Aural/Oral Examination (15 min), internally
assessed
40% Written Examination (1 hour), internally assessed
20% Lecturer's assessment based on the listed tasks
as performed by the student in class.
Alternatively, the objectives may be assessed
continuously.
Criteria for Assessment
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performances:
- Appropriateness of responses
- Pronunciation/intonation/tones
- Language structure (i.e. syntax, word-order)
Internal Examination Requirements
Aural/Oral Examination 40%
Aural comprehension of several short, continuous
passages related to the listed tasks. (15%)
Series of simple, related role-plays, e.g. student
tasks for prices of items the examiner is offering
for sale, then student buys items and pays for
them. (15%)
Student to be given plan/map of
building/town/country, and asked for directions to
specified locations, or student to identify rooms on
floor plan of house and draw in furniture, according
to examiner's direction. (10%)
Written Examination 40%
Several short comprehension passages related to the
listed tasks.
(10%)
Student to write list of things to do in a certain situation - for himself or
someone else. (10%)
Write a simple letter, e.g. invitation, thank-you
note, announcement, etc. (15%)
General Criteria for Assigning Grades
A = shows mastery of the language areas and skills
specified in the syllabus. Makes only a few
errors.
B = shows some mastery of the language areas and skills specified in the
syllabus. Errors pose no real interference. C = shows the ability to
communicate within the specified areas. Errors are frequent but do not affect
overall communication. Often requires help. Understands most questions. F =
Frequency of errors hinders effective communication. Does not understand
questions. G = Does not understand questions, cannot respond.
NOTE: The Mandarin dialect of Chinese is studied.
