Description
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required by a farrier in the preparation of the foot of a horse with particular needs, and the application of an appropriate shoe to alleviate the problem. It includes consideration of the needs of foals and young horses, which in most cases do not require shoeing, as well as meeting the
particular needs of small ponies, chronically lame or damaged horses and specialised heavy draught animals. A number of horses should be fitted. This unit may require the farrier to work as part of a team with other professionals such as a veterinarian.
This unit forms part of the requirements of the trade qualification for farriery.
