Description
To enable students to communicate appropriately and
effectively in English and the LOTE (Language Other
Than English), both orally and in writing, in the
area of Language Studies.
To provide students with an overview of the
historical developments of the LOTE.

1 Identify some features of texts in the LOTE which place them in
different periods of time. 10%
2 Read a passage aloud using correct pronunciation, elision patterns and
intonation (or tones for Asian languages). 10%
3 Mark the main stress of a LOTE sentence in different places so as to
convey different meanings. 10%
4 Form compound words from given lists in the
LOTE. 5%
5 Complete exercises requiring knowledge of the structures of
LOTE. 20%
6 Complete vocabulary exercises using
dictionaries. 20%
7 Role-play conversations on everyday topics demonstrating the ability
to use the conventions of conversation of the LOTE to establish and maintain

I Criteria for Assessment
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performance:
- Clarity of expression
- Command of topic-specific vocabulary
- Appropriateness of language
- Fluency
- Structural accuracy
- Knowledge of subject matter
- Accuracy of information.
