Description
To enable students to communicate appropriately and
effectively in English and the LOTE (Language Other
Than English), both orally and in writing, in the
area of the law.
To provide students with an understanding of legal
matters in a specific and general context in
Australia.
To enable students to extract and impart relevant information from a variety of
sources related to the legal field.
To familiarise students with specific vocabulary
relevant to the legal field.

1 Complete various types of exercise (oral/aural, written) which
demonstrate an understanding of the correct application of legal
terminology. 20%
2 Write a letter explaining briefly how the Courts work in WA (300
words). 15%
3 Explain to a LOTE speaker the procedure to follow when appearing in a lower
court as a witness. 10%
4 Role-play a language aide assisting a LOTE client to apply for
Australian citizenship and help him/her to fill out the relevant
forms. 25%
5 Categorise a number of legal actions into civil and
criminal. 15%
6 Demonstrate an ability to identify the most important rights and
duties of Australian citizens. 15%
CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performance:
- Clarity of expression
- Command of topic-specific vocabulary
- Appropriateness of language
- Fluency
- Structural accuracy
- Knowledge of subject matter
- Accuracy of information.
