Description
To teach advanced features of the COBOL programming
language.

To give practical experience, in a range of industry-standard data processing
problems.

Students must pass the examination.

Where a pass is achieved in the examination, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.

Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.

Examination 70%

One two-hour written paper consisting of the
following components:

1 Two questions relating to some of the following topics:

- Sort feature
- Sub-programs
- String manipulations
- Relative files
- Indexed files
- Variable length records
- Multi-user I/O to a file (20% each)

2 Design and code a program 60%

Internal Assessment

Programming assignments requiring the design, coding
and testing of programs which cover two of the
following (the other programs should be written as
exercises):

1 Report, using the SORT verb and a COBOL sub- program to, say, reformat
or validate the date.

2 Program/sub-program, involving the manipulating of strings of
characters.

3 Update production of invoices from data in existing indexed files (or
similar problem).

4 Online update of Indexed files from a menu. Some code to be available
from COPY libraries, and all students to share the same data files.
