Description
To enable students to communicate appropriately and
fluently in Chinese, both orally and in writing.
To teach students the grammatical structures in
Chinese necessary to perform the tasks listed in
this syllabus, building on previous units.

Examination 40%
Assessment is to be based on the listed tasks. Oral
examinations should be taped. Students must achieve
at least 50% of EACH of the three
assessment components.
40% Aural/Oral Examination (15-20 mins), internally
assessed
40% Written Examination (2.5 hours)
20% Lecturer's continuous assessment of oral and
written performance of student in class.
Criteria for Assessment
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performances:
- Appropriateness of responses
- Pronunciation/intonation/tones
- Language structure (i.e. syntax, word-order)
- Fluency (ease of use, hesitations, repetitions)
- Flexibility (capability to cope with unpredicted elements
in a dialogue)
Examination Requirements
Aural/Oral Examination 40%
Conversation on a prepared topic nominated by the
student. (15%)
Student to select controversial topic, and be
prepared to argue for or against it (the teacher to
take opposite view). (15%)
Public announcement made on tape (i.e. at a railway
station, airport, etc.). Students to take down
specific details. (10%)
Written Examination 40%
Several comprehension passages based on the listed
tasks. (10%)
Write a short report on an accident. (10%)
Write a passage to promote a specific item or
service, using persuasive language. (10%)
Short essay in continuous prose on a choice of
topics related to the listed tasks. (10%)
General Criteria for Assigning Grades
A = shows mastery of the language areas and skills
specified in the syllabus. Makes only a few
errors.
B = shows some mastery of the language areas and skills specified in the
syllabus. Errors pose no real interference. C = shows the ability to
communicate within the specified areas. Errors are frequent but do not affect
overall communication. Often requires help. Understands most questions. F =
Frequency of errors hinders effective communication. Does not understand
questions. G = Does not understand questions, cannot respond.
NOTE: The Mandarin dialect of Chinese is studied.
