Description
To teach the basic features of the PL/I Language
(subset G).
To provide practical experience in programming
commercial applications involving stream files using
structured programming techniques.

Students must pass the examination.
Where a pass is achieved in the examination, the
overall mark is the sum of the two components,
weighted as shown above.
Otherwise, the overall mark is determined by 100%
weighting for the written paper.
Examination
One two hour written paper consisting of the following components:
- Six to ten short questions testing specific details of
syntax associated with topics 1 to 8. Some questions may include a small
amount of algorithmic development 40%
- One question requiring the writing of code for a procedure
using some of character handling, built-in functions, arrays, operators and
expressions 20%
- One question requiring the design and code for a program
using stream files for a simple commercial application. The program should
require the use of arrays and/or structures and make use of several
procedures 40%
Internal Assessment
Assignment 1 : I/O using LIST and EDIT with
stream files
(e.g. a filter program) 15%
Assignment 2: Array and character handling,
sub-routines
and programme modularisation 15%
