This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement routines and strategies that support children’s physical and emotional wellbeing.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Promote behaviours that support children’s physical health
- 1.1 Engage children in conversations about a healthy lifestyle
- 1.2 Provide experiences for children to discover how their bodies work
- 1.3 Explain the benefits of physical activity and nutrition to children at a level appropriate to their age and stage of development
- 1.4 Provide materials and equipment to support physically active play
- 1.5 Support and encourage children to regularly participate in physical activity
2 Provide personal care routines that foster children’s wellbeing
- 2.1 Reciprocate information with families about their child’s participation in routines
- 2.2 Incorporate children and families’ individual preferences and needs into personal care routines
- 2.3 Provide materials and equipment that facilitate children’s active participation and self-help skills
- 2.4 Supervise and engage with children during personal care routines
- 2.5 Provide a safe, comfortable and peaceful environment for sleep and rest
- 2.6 Implement nappy changing routines that maintain children’s safety and comfort
- 2.7 Maintain children’s dignity, privacy, safety and comfort while supporting them to learn to use the toilet and with dressing and undressing
- 2.8 Follow infection control procedures during personal care routines
3 Provide mealtime routines that foster feelings of belonging
- 3.1 Arrange the physical environment to facilitate social interaction between children, other children and educators
- 3.2 Engage children in preparing and cleaning the physical environment before and after meals
- 3.3 Involve children in the preparation and serving of food
- 3.4 Encourage children to share their family experiences about preparing and sharing food and mealtimes
- 3.5 Offer children nutritious food and safe drinking water throughout the day
