Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work collaboratively with families to provide care for their children.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who guide families through the orientation to the service and then regularly exchange information to support their child’s engagement in the program. The educators provide
information to families and encourage their participation in the service.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Orientate families to the service
  • 1.1 Welcome families and children in a friendly and courteous manner
  • 1.2 Identify family’s expectations for the service
  • 1.3 Provide information about the service to families in a way that is accessible to them
  • 1.4 Answer family’s queries about the service
  • 1.5 Plan the child’s transition to the service with families
2 Get to know families
  • 2.1 Clarify family’s aspirations and goals for their child
  • 2.2 Identify the influence that background, experience and culture have on family’s perspectives and expectations for care
  • 2.3 Communicate in a way that respects the values, culture and expectations of families
  • 2.4 Maintain professional boundaries with families in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Gather information from families about their child
  • 3.1 Gather and record information about the child’s care routines, health status and wellbeing in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Gather and record information about the child’s interests, likes and dislikes in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Gather and record information about the child’s relationships, development and strengths in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Maintain confidentiality when recording and storing information
4 Engage in shared decision making with families about their child
  • 4.1 Develop shared goals for their child’s learning
  • 4.2 Reach agreement on individualised care strategies for their child
  • 4.3 Inform families about their child’s participation in the program after each attendance
  • 4.4 Seek feedback and suggestions from families about their child and incorporate into the program
  • 4.5 Collaborate with families to develop responses to incidents or concerns that arise, in accordance with workplace procedures.
5 Provide information to support and inform families
  • 5.1 Display aspects of children’s participation in the program in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 5.2 Notify families about changes to policies, procedures and programs
  • 5.3 Provide resources about parenting and child related topics relevant to the families at the service
  • 5.4 Provide information about local community services and resources that support children and families
  • 5.5 Distribute information in a way that is accessible to families
  • 5.6 Ensure information is current, accurate and professionally presented
6 Utilise the capabilities of families to enrich service provision
  • 6.1 Inform families of the ways they can be involved in the service in accordance with workplace procedure
  • 6.2 Invite family members to participate in children’s experiences within the program
