This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to facilitate and promote children’s right to play.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who plan and provide engaging play experiences and environments and encourage children to participate in these. They also promote the importance of play to families.

1 Create a physical environment that enables play

  • 1.3 Provide materials and equipment that facilitate play and arrange them in an inviting way
  • 1.4 Provide open-ended materials and experiences that encourage child directed play and offer choice

2 Plan for play
  • 2.1 Allocate blocks of time for play to develop and for play episodes to be completed in children’s own time
  • 2.2 Gather materials and equipment for play experiences and spaces prior to implementation
  • 2.3 Select and arrange materials and experiences in consultation with children, considering safety
  • 2.4 Incorporate local events when planning play spaces and experiences
3 Encourage children’s engagement in play
  • 3.1 Support children’s individual ways of engaging in play
  • 3.2 Show interest in children’s play by asking questions and making comments
  • 3.3 Enter and participate in children’s play at their request
  • 3.4 Interact with children during play to guide and support their learning
  • 3.5 Use specific feedback to encourage and acknowledge children’s efforts
  • 3.6 Adapt or extend play to suit the interests and needs of children at the time
4 Promote play to families
  • 4.1 Identify play as a fundamental right of childhood
  • 4.2 Inform families about the benefits of play to children’s health, development and wellbeing
  • 4.3 Advise families about the influence that play has on children’s future educational success
  • 4.4 Share strategies to engage children in play
  • 4.5 Provide information about materials, equipment and environments that encourage play
